Sixth-generation Nyonya, Shermay Lee who is known for her punchy chillies and addictive keropok has teamed up with the dedicated chefs at The Dining Room, Sheraton Towers to bring you an authentic Peranakan experience over the next four weekends, from 7 -29 April. The feast would feature over 20 heritage dishes prepared true to Shermay’s and her grandmother’s recipes, on top of the usual international spread.
Tried and tested by us, here are some Peranakan highlights not to be missed!
Chap Chai. A seamlessly unappealing dish but deliciously packed with flavours. Shermay shared that the right way to prepare Chap Chai is to let it cook long enough for the flavours to be expelled but still keeping the vegetables in one piece. True enough, unlike the Chap Chai we have at Cai Fan stalls, this is definitely more flavourful and generously laden with cabbage, Chinese mushroom, glass noodles, pork belly, prawns and dried tofu skin soaked in a robust soybean stock. It was easily our favourite.
Tangy Udang Nanas Pedas consist of fresh succulent prawns and sweet juicy pineapples doused in aromatic spicy gravy. Just like how I love Hawaiian pizzas, I really enjoyed the addition of pineapples in this dish. Not only does it bring out the freshness of the prawns, it gives the spicy gravy an extra dose of sweetness. An extraordinary combination of sweet, tangy and spicy.
Ayam Buah Keluak. A hearty dish that requires three days of preparation. It features chicken thigh, pork ribs and Buah Keluak nuts. Like us, you will not be able to resist the temptation of drowning a bowl of rice with the fragrant gravy.
Finally, DIY your own ice cream at the dessert station! We had the Chendol Coconut Ice Cream. If that is not your thing, you can indulge in an array of assorted Peranakan Kuehs and Bandung Rose Jelly. An equally sweet ending to your meal!
Another thing to look forward to is the unlimited serving of assorted Keropok accompanied with Shermay’s signature sauces such as the Cilicuka (Peranakan chilli sauce)!
It sure is going to be a mouthwatering Peranakan adventure this April.
