Working in the CBD around Tanjong Pagar or even nearby Chinatown? You would know how crazy lunch hour can get during that time – the queues and jostling for seats. The perfect remedy is always to find a new haunt or hidden jem around the area. Thankfully, during one of our walks around the area, we came across this Indoneisan shop – Tok Tok Indonesian Shop House.
Located along the Ann Siang Hill lane, it is only a few minutes walk up from Amoy Food Centre or Maxwell Food Centre, and the crowd here is minimal. We initally had doubts about the place because you rarely find value for money food around this area of Ann Siang. Its literally a ghost town except for the Coconut Club down the road.
So it was a surprise that we came across Tok Tok Indonesian Soup House. As it name suggests, the shop sells indonesian soups like Soto ayam, Soto Betawi and Mie Ayam Jamur. Apart from that, they have my favourite Ayam Penyet and Ayam Bakar too! priced around $7 – $9, its $2 more expensive than the penyets sold along the coffee shops at Telok Ayer. However what i liked about this place is that the crowds are lesser and more time to indulge in your meal.
Served in old school metal plates, Tok Tok Indonesian Soup House offers you that sense of nostalgia when chowing down your food. The ayam penyet was quite well done, served with toufu, the fried bean and veges. Chilli was spicy as usual for the kick. Usually i’ll add this sweet indon sauce which goes so well with the fried chicken.
